This project realizes a long held dream of the Peterborough artistic community. Based on the recommendations of a feasibility study prepared by Lett/Smith Architects, an existing cinema was fully renovated to provide a new performing arts centre. With 640 seats, this fully equipped, as-new, flexible space provides Peterborough with a much needed facility at a fraction of the cost of a similar new space.
The existing cinema was gutted, a new basement dug out for a lounge, the orchestra and balcony re-configured for better sight-lines, and the ceiling removed. There were also facilities added under the new stage.
The side portals of the proscenium opening were designed with removable mahogany panels to provide acoustic flexibility for music or drama.
